Everything you need to know about radiofrequency microneedling

Introducing the ultimate synergy in skincare: Radiofrequency Microneedling. This cutting-edge treatment combines the use of radiofrequency with microneedle technology (utilizing wands adorned with fine needles) to induce micro-injuries on the skin surface. The dual-action therapy triggers collagen production, reducing wrinkles, skin dullness, laxity, uneven texture, and acne scars.

While microneedling alone aids in stimulating collagen, the addition of radiofrequency makes a significant difference. Conventional microneedle devices don’t penetrate deep into the skin, reaching only the superficial layer (about 0.25mm deep) without the transfer of radiofrequency thermal energy into the skin. Radiofrequency microneedles, adjustable in depth usually between 0.5 to 3.5mm, vary with devices. I personally experienced the benefits of microneedling in reshaping collagen, particularly beneficial in smoothing out old acne scars on my cheeks.

Radiofrequency Microneedling Process

Like many other office treatments, radiofrequency microneedling involves some preparatory steps and post-care guidelines. The facial treatment itself takes approximately 30 minutes.

  • In the week before treatment, consult with your doctor to understand which medications you should stop, including retinoids, AHAs, and vitamin C products.
  • Upon arrival at the appointment, a local anesthetic cream is applied to ensure you don’t feel the treatment. If your pain tolerance is low, you can also request over-the-counter pain relievers for preventive use.
  • The treatment is performed on the entire face, typically taking a total of about 25 to 30 minutes. Depending on the device and your skin tolerance, your skin may undergo two to three passes.
  • Post-treatment, a cooling mask is applied to soothe the skin.
  • If still feeling sensitive, apply sunscreen on the skin before leaving the office.
  • In the days following the procedure, use a gentle cleanser and broad-spectrum sunscreen to help protect and soothe the skin. Ensure regular moisturization to aid faster skin healing. Avoid using retinoids and exfoliants like AHAs and BHAs for a few days until the skin heals.

Benefits of Radiofrequency Microneedling:

  1. Radiant Skin: Within a few days post-surgery, you’ll begin to notice a brighter complexion and smoother skin.
  2. Overall Skin Rejuvenation: Increased collagen production and skin tightness contribute to a youthful appearance.
  3. Significant Reduction in Acne Scars: Treatment shows improvement in scar depth, texture, and overall appearance.
  4. Decreased Neck Wrinkles: By promoting collagen production, skin vitality is restored, helping smooth out fine lines on the neck.
