Asian Ingredients Awards 2023 Shortlist (Cos&Beauty)

NutraIngredients recently released the shortlist for the 2023 Asia Ingredients Awards, which aims to encourage innovation and cutting-edge research in the fields of functional foods, dietary supplements, and nutritional ingredients. The award categories include oral beauty, cognitive function, microbiome regulation, sports nutrition, weight management, and healthy aging, with the following lists of finalists in each category.

Annual Ingredient: Oral Beauty

AstaReal Natural Astaxanthin, Fuji Chemical Industries – AstaReal

AstaReal’s founding team, originating from Uppsala University in Sweden, began researching Haematococcus pluvialis (rainforest algae) in 1988 and successfully commercialized natural astaxanthin derived from Haematococcus pluvialis in 1994. Astaxanthin, known for its potent antioxidant properties, revitalizes photoaged skin by eliminating oxidative stress and inflammation across all skin layers. It reduces wrinkles, improves skin microtexture, and enhances skin elasticity by strengthening the collagen layer.

HOWARU® Skin Bifidobacterium lactis Bl-04®, International Flavors Fragrances (IFF)

HOWARU® is a series of clinically proven probiotic solutions provided by IFF Health experts. Bifidobacterium lactis Bl-04® is a human isolate long considered safe for human consumption. Bl-04® exhibits strong stability, withstands extracellular gastrointestinal conditions, and maintains vitality after consumption, having been used for decades in various foods and supplements. The immunological effects of Bl-04® have been validated. In a randomized, triple-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel-group clinical trial led by IFF last year, the results indicated that Bl-04® can reduce facial wrinkles within four weeks, particularly in young individuals.

HydroCurc®, Pharmako Biotechnologies

HydroCurc® is a highly bioavailable and cold water dispersible (CWD) extract of turmeric. Most curcuminoids are lipophilic, with limited solubility in the aqueous gastrointestinal environment, resulting in lower absorption rates. HydroCurc®, a novel form of curcumin, allows curcumin particles in HydroCurc® to freely disperse in aqueous environments such as the stomach. With over 80% curcumin content, HydroCurc® provides a substantial amount of active ingredients in water-dispersible formulations, achieving higher absorption rates. In a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled study, HydroCurc® demonstrated a faster recovery of exercise training or a recovery of exercise training at a higher threshold, possibly due to the anti-inflammatory properties of curcumin, reducing muscle pain, and regulating energy metabolism.

Additionally, a double-blind experiment showed a significant reduction in inflammatory biomarkers IL-6 and TNF-a in subjects taking a high-dose iron + curcumin component, HydroCurc. The study found that curcumin does not affect iron absorption; instead, it aids in iron absorption. Moreover, curcumin can chelate excess free iron, preventing iron breakdown and deposition in other areas of the body, such as the kidneys.

Niagen®, TruNiagen

The primary component of NIAGEN® is nicotinamide riboside (NR), a derivative of vitamin B3. Cells can use NR to produce nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+), a naturally occurring molecule in cells that regulates cellular aging and maintains normal bodily functions. With aging, NAD+ is significantly depleted in the process of resisting cellular aging, making external supplementation of NR necessary to maintain NAD+ levels.

NIAGEN® has undergone FDA safety review, with more than four clinical trials proving its safe and effective ability to increase human NAD+. It can help boost cellular metabolism and energy production, maintain healthy mitochondria, and promote cellular repair.

Supebra Boost, Aker BioMarine

Supebra Boost is krill oil extracted from Antarctic krill Euphausia Superba. In krill oil, Omega-3 is bound to phospholipids, leading to a 68% increase in red blood cell uptake compared to other marine Omega-3 sources.

Aker BioMarine utilizes its exclusive Flexitech? technology to prepare Supebra Boost. This patented technology removes unwanted salts and other polar components while concentrating beneficial ingredients. As a result, Supebra Boost contains higher levels of long-chain eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), phospholipids, and choline. This technology improves the stability and viability of probiotics in the gastrointestinal tract.

Bifidobacterium lactis IDCC 4301 inhibits cell differentiation and lipid accumulation by suppressing the expression of fat-generating enzymes in 3T3-L1 cells. Additionally, in mice on a high-fat diet (HFD), administering Bifidobacterium lactis IDCC 4301 reduces body weight and fat tissue weight, improves serum lipid levels, and downregulates the expression of genes related to fat formation.
